Georgetown Law Teaching Awards

With more than a hundred full-time professors and hundreds more adjunct professors, the Georgetown Law faculty represents an extraordinary range of pedagogical and scholarly achievement. Our faculty demonstrate a deep commitment to teaching, whether they are explaining the nuances of legal realism, helping a clinic student prepare for oral argument or advising a student about courses and professional pathways. To recognize their excellence, Georgetown Law has established the following teaching awards.

Frank F. Flegal Excellence in Teaching Award

The annual Frank F. Flegal Teaching Award for outstanding teaching was instituted in 1995 to recognize teaching excellence in its many forms. Frank Flegal taught at the Law Center from 1971 to 1992; his colleagues described him as “a wonderful colleague, highly supportive of each of us who had the great pleasure of serving with him. But above all, he was an accomplished teacher. Some of us would go so far as to say that he was the most outstanding teacher that we had ever had the pleasure of observing. It was only fitting that, upon his much-too-early death, an Excellence in Teaching Award was established in his name.” Each year, we honor a different full-time faculty member for his or her teaching excellence. In some years the award was given to a group of faculty for an outstanding group effort (e.g., the two groups of faculty who created the curricula for Section 3 and Week One).

The awardee is chosen by the Teaching Committee, upon nominations from faculty and students.

Charles Fahy Distinguished Adjunct Professor Award

Each year, hundreds of Washington, D.C., lawyers selflessly dedicate time and energy to teaching courses as adjunct professors at Georgetown Law. Their presence has enabled Georgetown Law to offer the most wide-ranging curriculum of J.D. and LL.M. courses in the country.

To recognize the contributions of these adjuncts, the Law Center’s “hidden endowment,” the Dean designates for each academic year the recipients of the Charles Fahy Distinguished Adjunct Professor Award for both the J.D. and LL.M. programs. Fahy Professors have provided exceptional service to Georgetown in teaching, curriculum development, student counseling, and involvement in extra-curricular Law Center activities.

The award is named after the late Charles Fahy, a noted Georgetown Law alumnus who served as U.S. Solicitor General and U.S. Court of Appeals Judge.
