Five Georgetown Law Faculty Members Honored with Named Professorships

The Georgetown Law community gathered on Feb. 28 to celebrate the achievements of five faculty members who were awarded named professorships.

Dean William M. Treanor, the Paul Regis Dean Leadership Chair, welcomed each honoree to the stage to present a medal and read a citation highlighting their scholarship and other accomplishments.

The Law Center’s newest named professors are:

Anthony E. Cook, Reynolds Family Endowed Service Professor

“For his groundbreaking work contributing to the establishment of the Critical Race Theory movement, his focus on closing the racial wealth gap through his clinical work and his lifelong commitment to community development, I am honored to name Anthony Cook the Reynolds Family Endowed Service Professor,” Treanor said.

This professorship was established by Hope C. Reynolds, B’75, P’03, and Thomas A. Reynolds III, B’74, P’03. Mr. Reynolds, a partner at Winston & Strawn and former assistant Attorney General for the State of Illinois, is the current chair of the Georgetown University Board of Directors and has served on several other boards and committees at the University and the Law Center.

“For his profound scholarship that has helped shape the national and global debate on international tax reform, his work that has illuminated the ways international tax intersects with international trade law, public international trade law and climate issues and his public service as the deputy assistant secretary for multilateral negotiations in the Office of Tax Policy of the United States Department of the Treasury, I am honored to name Itai Grinberg the Carmack Waterhouse Professor of International Economic Law,” Treanor said.

The Carmack Waterhouse professorships were established through a bequest from the estate of Carmack Waterhouse, L’35, and his wife Mary. Waterhouse was a longtime patent attorney with the Atomic Energy Commission.

Michael S. Pardo, Scott K. Ginsburg Professor of Evidence Law

“For his path-breaking work and his role as a leading voice in the field of evidence law and theory, his deep commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship and exploring the connections between different areas of legal theory and his fascinating exploration of the connections between epistemology and legal evidence and proof, I am please to name Michael Pardo the Scott K. Ginsburg Professor of Evidence Law,” Treanor said.

Scott K. Ginsburg, L’78, owner of Boardwalk Auto Group in Dallas, is one of the Law Center’s most generous living donors. In addition to sponsoring multiple professorships, his gifts have also supported campus improvements such as the Scott K. Ginsburg Sport & Fitness Center.

Alicia Plerhoples, Paul and Patricia Saunders Professor in Business Law

“For her inspiring scholarship on social entrepreneurship and how it can benefit low-income communities, her deep commitment to clinical work and fostering a generation of socially minded legal professionals and her impactful leadership in the Law Center community, I am pleased to name Alicia Plerhoples the Paul and Patricia Saunders Professor in Business Law,” Treanor said.

This is the second professorship endowed by Paul and Patricia Saunders, who attended the ceremony with their son and granddaughters. A Distinguished Visitor from Practice for more than two decades, Mr. Sanders, L’66, is former chair and a member emeritus of the Board of Visitors and a Paul R. Dean Alumni Award and John Carroll Medal recipient.

Brad Snyder, St. Thomas More Professor in Law and History

“For his imaginative and tireless work examining the political and social worlds in which legal history takes place, his role as one of the leading legal historians of the early 20th century and his deep and genuine engagement with the intellectual community at the Law Center, I am pleased to name Brad Snyder the St. Thomas More Professor in Law and History,” Treanor said.

Established by an anonymous donor in honor of Saint Thomas More, the patron saint of lawyers, court clerks, civil servants and politicians, this professorship honors and supports preeminent legal historians.
