Office of Equity & Inclusion
In light of our Jesuit mission to educate the whole person (cura personalis) and our ongoing commitment to fostering a respectful, collaborative legal community, Georgetown Law launched the Office of Equity & Inclusion (OEI) in 2016 to advance community-wide inclusion and broad access to opportunity.
OEI collaborates with the Law Center community—including staff, faculty, students, alumni, and university partners—to maintain an environment that welcomes people from a wide variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences. We work strategically to develop and support inclusive community initiatives through open-access programming, educational and training opportunities, professional skill-building, and advisory services available to all members of the Law Center community.
All programs and activities are open to all Georgetown University students regardless of race, national origin, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, disability, age, or any other characteristic protected under University policy or applicable law. Our work is focused on fostering the professional competencies, respectful engagement skills, and inclusive collaboration necessary for effective legal practice in a diverse society.
Programming and Support
The Office of Equity & Inclusion provides institutional support to members of the Law Center community to examine and address complex issues related to respectful engagement, equity of access, and inclusive participation in the Law Center, legal academe, and the profession.
FOR STUDENTS
In alignment with the American Bar Association’s Goal III, which promotes the elimination of bias and broad participation in the legal profession, the Office of Equity & Inclusion offers the following support to students:
- Advising individual students on navigating the academic and professional environment, fostering respectful engagement, and addressing barriers to full participation in the Law Center community.
- Serving as a resource to all student groups, with special attention to ensuring access for those who have historically had fewer opportunities to engage with the legal profession.
- Elevating the wide range of perspectives and life experiences present in the Law Center community to strengthen classroom and other learning environments, and to facilitate engagement across differences. OEI believes that creating space for a broad spectrum of voices is essential to a robust exchange of ideas and to developing deep respect for differing viewpoints.
FOR FACULTY & STAFF
The Office of Equity & Inclusion develops programs, curriculum, and moderated discussions to enhance inclusion, foster a sense of community, and promote skillful engagement across differing perspectives. We do this by partnering with faculty and administrators to support classroom climate and pedagogy through:
- Identifying, sharing, and supporting innovative pedagogical best practices through continuing education and professional development workshops and seminars that are open to all instructors and staff.
- Coalition building with partners to create co-curricular programming related to cross-cultural communication, civil discourse, and intersections between professional ethics, equal opportunity, and varied perspectives.
