Joint Degree Programs
The Law Center sponsors degree programs in which students may simultaneously pursue study leading to the Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the Law Center and a Graduate degree from the Georgetown University School of Business Administration (MBA), Georgetown Public Policy Institute (MPP), School of Foreign Service (MSFS, MAAS, MAREES, MAGES, MALAS, and MASSP), the Department of Government (J.D./PhD), the Department of Philosophy (J.D./MA, J.D./PhD), or the Law Center (J.D./LL.M.). A J.D./MPH is also offered in cooperation with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (MPH).
The J.D./MBA, J.D./MPP, and J.D./School of Foreign Service programs provide for accelerated achievement of two degrees in four years instead of the five normally required to complete the degrees separately. J.D./Government and J.D./Philosophy degrees are also accelerated, with completion depending on whether a student is full-time or part-time and, in the case of the J.D./Philosophy degree, is a Masters or Doctoral candidate.
The J.D./MPH degree program, while not an accelerated program, affords students who are not health professionals the opportunity to coordinate the study of law and public health at two highly respected institutions.
Georgetown also offers four J.D./LL.M. joint degree programs: in International Business & Economic Law, National Security Law, Securities & Financial Regulation, and Taxation. Students who participate in one of these programs and take the requisite number of qualifying courses during their J.D. studies will be able to complete an LL.M. degree in only one additional semester. Students generally apply to these joint degree programs during the summer following their 2L or 3E year. For more information about these joint degree programs, please refer to the left-hand navigation.
For information on admissions requirements and application procedures for the joint degree programs, contact the Office of Admissions. Students must apply separately to the Law Center and to the companion graduate program.
Information for Current J.D. Students
1L/1E Students
With the exception of the J.D./MASSP Program, students may apply to a joint degree program during their first year of law school.* General information about the admissions requirements for each of the joint degree programs is available from each companion program. Applications must be requested from the companion program and applicants who are current law students are judged by the same criteria as all other applicants to these programs. Current J.D. students who plan to apply to a joint degree program should consult J.D. Academic Services at (202) 662-9039 to discuss their plans for meeting the requirements of the J.D. degree.
2L/2E Students
Under some circumstances, second year law students may still be able to apply to a joint degree program. Consult J.D. Academic Services if you are interested in applying to a companion program as a second year law student to discuss their plans for meeting the requirements of the J.D. degree.
* Beginning in January 2011, SSP policy requires applicants interested in admission to the joint Georgetown SSP M.A./J.D. program apply to both the M.A. and the J.D. programs simultaneously. Students must apply independently to both the Law Center and the SSP and be admitted to both in order to be considered joint degree program students. Applicants who have already begun their studies at the Law Center or at the SSP will not be considered for admission to the joint degree program. For questions about this policy, please contact the SSP Admissions department at sspinfo@georgetown.edu or 202-687-5679.
