LL.B./LL.M. (King's College London)
Georgetown Law and King’s College London Dickson Poon School of Law(This link opens in a new tab) have established the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.)/LL.M. dual degree program, offered to a small number of LL.B. students from King’s College London to earn an internationally focused LL.M. degree from Georgetown University.
Students start their year-long LL.M. experience by spending the fall semester at Georgetown Law in Washington, D.C., and return to London, United Kingdom the following spring semester to complete LL.M. coursework at the Center for Transnational Legal Studies(This link opens in a new tab) (CTLS).
Program Overview
The LL.B/LL.M. is a four-year dual degree program ideal for students interested in international, comparative and transnational legal studies. Below is the order of dual degree program study:
- Years One and Two: Students study in London, United Kingdom, starting required and optional LL.B. modules at King’s College London Dickson Pool School of Law.
- Year Three – Fall Semester: Students study in Washington, D.C., starting LL.M. coursework at Georgetown Law.
- Year Three – Spring Semester: Students return to London, United Kingdom, completing LL.M. coursework at CTLS.
- Year Four: Students finish study in London, United Kingdom, completing required and optional LL.B. modules at King’s College London Dickson Pool School of Law.
Completion of the dual degree program results in students earning an LL.B. from King’s College London and either the LL.M. in General Studies(This link opens in a new tab) or LL.M. in International Legal Studies(This link opens in a new tab) from Georgetown Law.
Visit the King’s College London Law LL.B.(This link opens in a new tab) page, Georgetown Law LL.M. – London Option(This link opens in a new tab) page, and Center for Transnational Legal Studies(This link opens in a new tab) website for a broader program overview of the dual degree program.
Eligibility
Current LL.B. students from King’s College London Dickson Poon School of Law are eligible for the LL.B/LL.M. dual degree program.
Admissions
Interested students should apply for admission(This link opens in a new tab) during the second year of LL.B. studies. Students should consult their academic advisor at King’s College London for additional program information and application procedures.
Program Requirements
Students should visit the King’s College London LL.B. Teaching & Modules(This link opens in a new tab) page for information on LL.B. program requirements.
The total number of credits to complete a Georgetown LL.M. degree is 20 credits for foreign-trained students. Students in the LL.B/LL.M. dual degree program have the same full-time LL.M. program requirements as students who are studying the LL.M. in General Studies(This link opens in a new tab) or LL.M. in International Legal Studies(This link opens in a new tab) in Washington, D.C. for the whole academic year. The main difference is the spring semester, where dual degree students will take LL.M. coursework at CTLS.
CTLS coursework will be applied to fulfill the total credit requirement for the LL.M. in General Studies, and specialization credit requirement for the LL.M. in International Legal Studies.
Special Considerations
Because half of the LL.M. experience will be outside of the United States, there are some limitations to consider in terms of opportunities that are usually available for full-time LL.M. students studying in Washington, D.C. the whole academic year. LL.B./LL.M. dual degree students will not be able to:
- fulfill course requirements for New York Bar eligibility(This link opens in a new tab). Eligible LL.M. coursework to qualify for the New York Bar must be taken in the United States;
- pursue a Certificate of Specialization(This link opens in a new tab) in combination with their LL.M. program;
- participate in an externship(This link opens in a new tab); or
- apply for F-1 Post-Completion Optional Practical Training(This link opens in a new tab) (OPT) or J-1 Post-Completion Academic Training(This link opens in a new tab) (AT) after graduating from their LL.M. program if sponsored to study in the United States under an F-1 or J-1 visa.
