Why is financial aid a top priority?

Scholarships to Georgetown Law make a real and lasting impact. Scholarships change lives. Georgetown Law alumni — many of whom would not have been able to attend law school without financial aid — change lives.

For Georgetown Law to attract the most talented students from the most diverse backgrounds — and admit them regardless of their personal financial circumstances — we must offer financial aid that equals or surpasses the aid packages students are considering from rival schools.

Our mission to educate lawyers who will make a profound difference in the world is stronger than ever.

Goals

Our aim is simple: to increase the percentage of students who receive financial aid.

If we succeed, we will:

  • Improve our students’ lives by decreasing their debt
  • Improve the odds of enrolling the most talented and diverse student body Georgetown Law has ever seen
  • Enable students with the most limited means to attend Georgetown Law, and
  • Secure Georgetown’s place among top-tier law schools.

To increase the number of scholarships we offer to deserving students — and help them graduate with less debt — we must increase our investment in scholarship funds. Our goals are:

  • $50 million in endowed funds for new scholarships and fellowships to provide future generations with reliable support, year after year, and
  • $100 million in operating support for today’s scholarships and fellowships — to fund current programs and adapt as new priorities arise.

Please make a lasting commitment to Georgetown Law by funding one of the scholarship opportunities below.

Giving Opportunities

Named Endowed Scholarships

A gift to endow a scholarship creates an enduring legacy — the satisfaction of making a difference in the lives of many students over time. Endowed scholarships provide support in perpetuity and are the foundation of a strong financial aid program. Only interest from endowed funds is used; the principal is never touched and grows over time.

A gift of $100,000 or more endows a permanent fund and supports deserving students for years to come. Gifts are payable over five years. Donors may specify one preference for recipients, including students from a particular geographic area within the United States, or veterans. Other potential preferences are considered on a case-by-case basis. Donors may name the endowed fund in honor of an individual or themselves.

Current-Use Scholarships

Gifts of any amount allow Georgetown to assist deserving students in real time. Every dollar given to a current-use scholarship allows the Law Center to award larger amounts and reach additional students. A one-time gift of $5,000 has an immediate impact for students with financial need and provides the approximate impact of a $100,000 endowed scholarship fund’s annual support.

Opportunity Scholarships

Opportunity Scholarships are awarded to the most select group of high-need/high-merit students. These are extraordinary students who cannot access a Georgetown education without substantial support. Nearly 30% of Opportunity Scholars are first-generation college students.

An Opportunity Scholarship may be created as a named, endowed fund of $100,000 or more, payable over five years. Alternatively, it may be funded with a current-use pledge of $30,000, payable over three years. Georgetown Law aspires to offer 100 Opportunity Scholarships per year. Learn more on the Opportunity Scholarship Program page.

Yellow Ribbon Scholarships

Georgetown Law already has an excellent reputation among veterans, as the preeminent school that actively recruits at military academies, and the only school recruiting at West Point. Veterans bring a wealth of life experiences and perspectives to the classroom, enriching the entire campus community. The Law Center aims to expand funding for veterans and, when possible, to provide full-tuition support in partnership with the VA. Donors can launch veterans into fulfilling legal careers with a minimum endowed gift of $100,000 or a minimum current-use gift of $10,000.

Public Interest Law Scholars

The Public Interest Law Scholars program provides financial, professional, and academic support to law students dedicated to practicing law in the public interest. In addition to partial tuition scholarships, the program offers summer stipends to students with public interest placements. This competitive program selects a limited number of Public Interest Law Scholars from each class of admitted students. A gift of $750,000 will provide support for one student for three years; a gift of $32,000 will fund one student for one year.

LL.M. Scholarships

A gift to endow a scholarship for an LL.M. student provides support in perpetuity to students who demonstrate financial need. An LL.M. scholarship may be designated for a specific program or available for students from a specific country. Only interest from the endowed fund will be used to support students.

A gift of $100,000 will endow an LL.M. scholarship. Donors may name the endowed fund in honor of an individual or themselves. Current use gifts of $10,000 or more may be made to support an LL.M. student as well.

Evening Program Scholarships

The Georgetown Law Center’s long tradition of providing access to students from various backgrounds includes our continued commitment to the evening program. An endowed gift of $100,000 or more will provide financial assistance to deserving night students for years to come.
