F-1 and J-1 students are provided limited opportunities to engage in on-campus and off-campus employment, if eligibility criteria are met, while studying at Georgetown Law and after graduation. Please continue below to learn more about the various on-campus and off-campus employment authorizations offered to F-1 and J-1 students.

F-1 and J-1 On-Campus Employment

Both F-1 and J-1 students are eligible to work on-campus. On-Campus Employment is work performed on the premises of Georgetown Law, including employment at Georgetown University Main Campus and the School of Continuing Studies.

F-1 Curricular Practical Training

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is an F-1 employment authorization that allows students to participate in externship seminars, fieldwork-based practicum courses, or other courses that require an off-campus internship component. Course enrollment is required in order to apply for CPT.

F-1 Pre-Completion Optional Practical Training

Pre-Completion Optional Practical Training (OPT) is an F-1 employment authorization that allows students the opportunity to work off-campus before graduation in a position directly related to their field of study after completing one year of study in full-time status.

F-1 Post-Completion Optional Practical Training

Post-Completion Optional Practical Training (OPT) is an F-1 employment authorization that allows students to work after graduation in a position directly related to their field of study after completing one year of study in full-time status.

J-1 Academic Training

Academic Training (AT) is a J-1 employment authorization that allows students to work off-campus before or after graduation in a position directly related to their field of study. More information about the J-1 AT application process can be found on the Georgetown University Main Campus Office of Global Services website.
