Applications for the 2024 Research Fellowship are now closed.

The Goal:

This non-residential research fellowship is intended to support early-career academics who have not yet been in a tenure-track position for more than ten years, and who have scholarship focused on constitutional law or constitutional theory. The fellowship will allow for such scholars to receive dedicated commentary from senior scholars with expertise in their field, and to build a network with both junior and senior scholars working on constitutional law issues.

The Research Fellowship:

The non-residential fellowship is intended for early career academics who have not yet been in a tenure-track position for more than ten years, or for aspiring academics. The fellowship is for two years, with the possibility of being extended up to three years. Any decision to extend the fellowship beyond one year is at the discretion of the Center leadership to determine and based on fellowship contribution and performance.

There will be an annual gathering for Fellows, co-sponsored with the Foundation for the Constitution at which selected works-in-progress will be presented. The Center will arrange for senior scholars in the Fellows’ fields to provide dedicated commentary on these draft articles. The first annual gathering will take place on November 7th and 8th, 2024 at the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C.

Fellows will also have the opportunity to present an article in monthly Zoom gatherings, which will also include dedicated commentary from a senior scholar with expertise on their article’s topic.

Applicants should have a JD or doctoral level degree (PhD) in a relevant area. Successful applicants typically also have either a current tenure-track position, or experience in a federal appellate clerkship and a demonstrated aptitude for original research in constitutional law, typically in the form of past publications or student notes.

Successful applicants must commit to draft one original article during the duration of their fellowship and commit to attend at least one annual gathering.

The Georgetown Center for the Constitution:

The Georgetown Center for the Constitution, founded in 2012, offers a variety of programs on constitutional law and theory at Georgetown Law, placing special emphasis on how best to remain faithful to the Constitution’s text.

Led by Professors Randy Barnett and Stephanie Barclay, the Center sponsors lectures, faculty colloquia, conferences, visiting scholars, post-graduate fellowships, and student fellows. All of its activities are designed to engage scholars, students, and even Supreme Court justices in conversations about how to interpret and apply the document that sits under glass less than ten blocks away from Georgetown Law.

The Application Process:

Applicants should submit a CV with contact information for three references, a writing sample, and an optional research proposal (2,000 words or fewer) to matthew.mangiaracina@georgetown.edu.

Application Deadline: September 8, 2024 at 11:00 p.m. Eastern Time. We will choose the fellow based on demonstrated academic merit and potential, and on the intellectual strength of their research proposals.
