Whole Worker Surveillance
To have democracy, we need community. To create community, we need spaces where we can just… be human together. But corporate interests are working to convert all the spaces where we do so — where we work, play, worship, shop, and live our everyday lives — into sites of surveillance and data extraction. The first step to taking these spaces back is seeing them clearly.
With this project, we are opening a window into one such space: Whole Foods markets and the Whole Foods worker experience in the wake of Amazon’s acquisition of the grocery chain. From 2024-2026 we conducted surveys and interviews of Whole Foods workers nationwide. They told us about the ways surveillance tech and Amazon’s algorithmic management style impacts them, from their daily routines, to their sense of autonomy, to their relationships with their coworkers and customers alike.
In our new ‘zine, Whole Worker Surveillance, hear directly from those workers about how the introduction of surveillance technologies has changed their working lives, their ability to find and forge community at work, and to imagine organizing as a result.
