FAQ: How many offers for summer employment can I hold open before I need to start releasing some of them?
As some of you are deliberating over your offers for next summer, please keep in mind that the NALP Principles and Standards recommends that you do not hold open more than five offers of employment at any one time. Once you go over this limit, you should release your other offers within a week (or preferably immediately) to get back down to five offers.
For more detailed information on the NALP Principles please visit http://www.nalp.org/studentprofessionalism#offer.
A major reason for adhering to this principle is that some of your peers might be in a holding pattern with firms that are waiting on other students to make their final decisions on offers. Releasing your offers could possibly mean creating more opportunities for them. From the law firm’s perspective, they would also be appreciative of getting a final answer from you so that they can move on with their hiring process.
If you are having trouble deciding on which firms to release and which one to pick, please do not hesitate to speak with a counselor in OCS. We can help you with the deliberation process and give you an objective opinion of your options.
