University Legal Services/Georgetown Law Disability Rights - Criminal Justice Fellowship

University Legal Services (ULS) and Georgetown University Law Center are partnering to offer a one-year fellowship in disability rights/criminal justice for a Georgetown Law 2013 JD graduate. The fellowship offers a stipend of $32,000 and will run from August 2013 through July 2014.  Application deadline is May 10, 2013.

ULS is a nonprofit legal services agency that protects and advances the rights of people with disabilities through direct advocacy and systemic change. Part of our work includes preventing and redressing the abuse and neglect of incarcerated individuals with mental illness. Our goal is to reduce unnecessary periods of incarceration for DC residents with psychiatric disabilities/mental illness and remove barriers to their self-directed, successful integration into the community.

The ULS/Georgetown Law Fellow will join our interdisciplinary team to advocate for community-based alternatives to incarceration and redress instances of abuse and neglect experienced by people with psychiatric disabilities in DC’s criminal justice system. The Fellow’s responsibilities are outlined below and will be performed under the supervision of the DC Jail and Prison Advocacy Project Director.

Asset Forfeiture & Money Laundering Section (AFMLS), U.S. Department of Justice, Criminal Division
Washington, DC

The Asset Forfeiture and Money Laundering Section (AFMLS) leads the Department’s efforts to take the profit out of crime. The multi-dimensional responsibilities of AFMLS include anti-money laundering enforcement, forfeiture, law development, training, and technical assistance, all done in close cooperation with partners in the United States and abroad. AFMLS also provides oversight, management, and policy development for the Department’s Assets Forfeiture Fund (AFF).  Applicants should have a strong interest in criminal law and have strong writing and communication skills. Positions are open until filled.

Minimum Weeks Required: 8 weeks or more, part-time or full-time

Salary: Volunteer (without compensation) or work study credit only

Assignments:  Interns work directly with our trial attorneys on issues relating to domestic and international asset forfeiture and money laundering cases and legal policy.  Assignments will vary but can include legal research, drafting pleadings and motions, research and analysis of foreign money laundering standards and compliance, and assistance with legislative drafting.
