State Court Clerkships - Updated Information and Immediately Available Clerkship

We have updated state court clerkship vacancy information available online for all State Supreme Courts, as well as trial level courts in DC, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey - the information is available online at http://www.law.georgetown.edu/career/clerkships/resources.cfm under “Clerkship Vacancies.”  Clicking on a court’s link will provide not only a list of which judges are hiring, but also the required application materials.  Mailing information for these judges can be found on Symplicity under the Clerkships tab. 

The West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals is seeking applicants for 5 clerkship positions – including 2 two start immediately.  Successful applicants will have at least a 2.2 GPA, be able to pass a criminal background check, and be willing to take the West Virginia bar if offered the position.  The position has a rolling deadline, but students are encouraged to apply sooner rather than later.  Interested students should send an application, cover letter, resume, transcript, and writing sample to:

Clerkship FAQ: Finding and Applying to Recently Confirmed Federal Judges

Applying to recently confirmed judges is a great opportunity for many students.  The applicant pool is smaller, the judge may be hiring off-schedule, and there is the unique opportunity to see what a judge’s first year on the bench (or at least on this particular bench) is like.  However, the application process itself is a bit more confusing than regular, since recently confirmed judges are often not on OSCAR.  This Clerkship FAQ is designed to make it easier for students to understand how to effectively apply to recently confirmed judges.

REMINDER – Registration Deadline for the Robert E. Wone Annual Judicial Clerkship and Internship Conference at Georgetown

All students are invited to attend the Robert E. Wone Annual Judicial Clerkship and Internship Conference to be held at Georgetown University Law Center on Saturday, October 22, 2011, from 9am to 2pm, in McDonough 201.  This conference will provide an opportunity to attend panels about clerkships and internships, as well as meet judges and current and former law clerks.  In previous years, participating courts have included the D.C. Court of Appeals, D.C. Superior Court, Maryland District Court, United States Court of Appeals for Veteran Claims, United States District Court for the District of Columbia, United States District Court for the District of Virginia, United States Court of Federal Claims, United States Immigration and Naturalization Service, and the United States Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences.

New Jersey Clerkship Opportunities

New Jersey is currently hiring 480 law clerks at every level – Supreme Court, Appellate, and Trial court clerks.  Supreme Court law clerks work with justices on complex cases involving difficult issues of law.  Appellate Division law clerks conduct research, analyze legal data, prepare legal memoranda, process emergent motion applications, and proofread published opinions.  Law clerks for assignment judges learn all aspects of court administration and assist with processing emergent motions.  Trial court law clerks gain practical experience while gaining valuable insight into the judicial process.  Tax Court law clerks perform duties similar to those assigned to law clerks in the Appellate Division and trial courts, but do not mediate cases.
