Summer 2012 Law Internship at the Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, Office of Special Counsel for Immigration-related Unfair Employment Practices
We are a small office in the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. We enforce a federal statute that protects U.S. citizens and certain classes of immigrants from immigration-related discrimination in employment. We are looking to select law student interns for the summer to work alongside our attorneys and equal opportunity specialists. The position involves assisting our staff in investigating allegations of discrimination, such as conducting legal research, reviewing documents, compiling data, drafting letters, preparing legal memoranda, and sitting in on and/or conducting witness interviews, as well as policy-related work, such as preparing comments on proposed regulations and draft legislation, and attending legislative hearings and interagency meetings. The position is unpaid and we prefer that the student work full-time for a duration of at least 10 weeks. Our ideal candidate has strong research, writing and communication skills as well as an interest in learning. Demonstrated interest or experience in immigration or employment discrimination a plus but not required. Positions with the Department of Justice are open to U.S. citizens only.

Neighborhood Legal Services Program invites all law students, attorneys, and public interest community members to two Open House events to learn more about our work in our offices east of the Anacostia River. Guests will learn about the history of NLSP as well as the current, legal needs of low-income residents in these diverse and vibrant communities. Pro bono attorneys can assist us by volunteering for a few hours in our Brief Services Unit or by accepting an extended representation. NLSP also welcomes help from law students. Visitors to the Open Houses can meet with our Pro Bono Counsel to discuss current, pro bono opportunities and get registered that night in our volunteer database.

The Military Law Society and OCS are co-sponsoring a presentation on Veterans Law, including a discussion about the history of veterans benefits, elements of a compensation claim, and opportunities at the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims (CAVC). The event will take place Thursday, November 10, from 12:30-1:30pm, in McDonough room 110, and the Military Law Society will be providing pizza.
Four of the six new law clerks at the CAVC have attended this program, offered to DC area law schools, and summer internship applications are due in January – so the program is especially valuable for students looking to learn more about internship and clerkship opportunities at the CAVC.
