Initial Application Deadline for Equal Justice Foundation (EJF) Guaranteed Summer Funding - 2/28

EJF 2011 summer funding is available to JD students engaging in unpaid law-related work for a public interest organization or governmental entity (including judicial internships). EJF fellowships are guaranteed at $3,250 for 6 week, full-time internships.

ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must be JD students with a current status of 1L, 1E, 2E, 2L, or 3E, or joint or concurrent degree candidates graduating no sooner than December 2011. Projects must involve law-related work for a public interest organization or governmental entity. 

All students considering public interest opportunities for the summer must submit the initial online application by THIS Monday, February 28, at 6:00 pm.    This is a mandatory deadline, but a confirmed offer of employment is NOT required by this date.

All EJF applicants MUST attend a MANDATORY EJF Information Session, on either Wednesday, March 2 at 3:30 pm in McDonough 205 or Monday, March 21 at 4:45 pm in McDonough 202.

On August 27, 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gathered his trusted advisors in the lobby of the Willard Hotel to brainstorm ideas for his speech for the March on Washington. His lawyer and close friend, Clarence B. Jones, joined the group – sheltered behind a curtain of plants, chairs and watchful porters – and took notes on the discussion. Later, Clarence went up to his room to produce a draft, not realizing the speech he was working on would forever change the nation.

Taking Care of Business (TCB) - Job Search Class for 2L/3Es - Registration deadline tomorrow!

Last year, the Office of Career Services debuted this new program for job seekers, and we are excited to offer it again this spring.  Taking Care of Business is designed to help you develop a focus, keep you engaged, and overcome the obstacles you will undoubtedly encounter during your job search. 

The program, designed like a class, will meet weekly for an hour over a three-week period beginning February 28th.  Please note that the class will not meet over Spring Break.  Small group sessions (groups of no more than 8-10 students) will be led by OCS counselors and will work off a general curriculum to include a number of topics which will adapt to the needs and interests of the particular group of students.

International Law Speed Networking Breakfast - Thurs. March 10th

The International Law Section of the DC Bar invites you to an International Law Speed Networking Breakfast on Thursday, March 10th from 8:15 - 9:45am at Sidley Austin LLP (1501 K Street, NW, 6th Floor).  The cost is $5 for law students. 

An improving economy is a perfect time to get back into career networking.  Spend 10-15 minutes each with groups of experienced practitioners – potential mentors! -- from a variety of international law specialties, from both the private and public sectors.  It’s not a job fair, so don’t bring your resume, but do collect practical career advice and make new connections with attorneys in: 1) International Trade (trade policy, litigation and customs), 2) Export Controls and Sanctions, 3) International Dispute Resolution, 4) Investment and Finance, 5) International Intellectual Property, 6) Public and International Criminal Law, and 7) Immigration and Human Rights.  We’ll keep rotating until you’ve met everyone or we run out of time, coffee and muffins.

OCS and the Society for Health Law and Bioethics invite all interested students to attend a panel on Careers in Healthcare on Tuesday, March 1 at 5:00 p.m. in the OCS office (McDonough 328).  Details of the program, including the names of the panelists, will be available next week.  Light refreshments will be served, so if you plan to attend, please RSVP to ocsrsvp@law.georgetown.edu by Friday, February 25.

Georgetown Law Fellowship: 2011 Barker Fellowship in Animal Law

Georgetown Law Center and The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) are now accepting applications for the 2011 Barker Fellowship in Animal Law.  Funded by a generous donation from the Bob Barker Foundation, the annual fellowship offers a recent Georgetown Law graduate the opportunity to work for one year in the Animal Protection Litigation Section of HSUS’ Washington, DC office.  The fellowship is open to Georgetown JD students graduating in 2011 and recent JD graduates completing a clerkship in 2011.

The Animal Protection Litigation Section at HSUS conducts precedent-setting legal campaigns on behalf of animals in state and federal courts around the country. With a team of fifteen in-house litigators, and a docket of more than thirty active cases, the Animal Protection Litigation Section oversees the largest animal protection litigation program in the country.
