Continue ReadingProfessor Newman Hood is senior advisor in the Energy Resources Bureau at the U.S. Department of State. Previously, she was general counsel of Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C., the national aluminium smelter of Bahrain. Prior to that, she was senior legal counsel at Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, the national oil company of Kuwait. She was formerly an attorney at White & Case LLP, where she represented governments, banks and companies on international oil and gas projects. From 2002 until 2004, she served as petroleum legal advisor to the prime minister of East Timor, where she headed the office responsible for negotiations with the Australian government on petroleum-related treaties and permanent maritime boundaries and with international oil companies on oil and gas projects. In 2006, Professor Newman Hood co-chaired the 2006 annual conference of the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators. She was a Term Member of the Council on Foreign Relations from 2005 to 2010 and speaks French, Italian, Russian and Indonesian. She has published a number of op-eds and articles, including in The Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, China Daily and various legal and foreign policy journals.
