Making Complex Style Modifications Using the Task Pane

You can create paragraph styles through the task pane.

  1. Open the Styles and Formatting Task Pane.
  2. Position the cursor anywhere within a paragraph that contains the style you want to modify.
  3. That style name will be displayed in the Formatting of Selected Text field, located at the top of the task pane.
  4. Hold your cursor over the Formatting of Selected Text field.
  5. A downwards pointing arrow will appear to its right.
  6. Click on the downwards pointing arrow and choose the option Modify....
  7. The Modify Style dialog will appear.
  8. Click on the Format button, located in the lower left-hand corner of the dialog (see image at right).
  9. A submenu will appear.
  10. Use the listed menu categories to make the desired changes.
  11. After making a change, click on the OK button.
  12. You will return to the Modify Style dialog.
  13. Click on its OK button.
  14. Your changes will affect all text that has that style applied within the open document.

Note: You should not apply direct formatting on paragraphs that already contain a style. Mixing styles with direct formatting can have unpredictable effects in your document. Trying to correct problems caused by this can be very time consuming.
