Creating a Table of Contents - Adding Heading Styles to Your Document

A style is a set of formatting characteristics that you can apply to text in your document. In order to create a Table of Contents, your document must contain Heading Styles. Microsoft Word contains up to nine different built-in Heading Styles. To apply a Heading Style, follow the instructions below.

  1. Select the text that you want to appear in your Table of Contents (usually a phrase or a brief sentence).
  2. Click on the arrow to the immediate right of the dropdown Style list, located in the Formatting toolbar.

  3. Select the appropriate Heading Style.
  4. The style will go into effect immediately.
