How to Change Default Toolbar & Menu Bar Settings

The Microsoft Word default window contains the Menu bar, the Standard toolbar, the Formatting toolbar, and the ruler. Sometimes, the Standard and Formatting toolbars share the same row. In addition, when you click on the Menu bar options, complete dropdowns do not always appear. To separate the toolbars and to view complete dropdown menus, follow the instructions below.
  1. Open Microsoft Word.
  2. Right-click on a blank space in the Menu bar (i.e., to the right of the Help option).
  3. A pop-up menu will appear.
  4. Click on the Customize option.
  5. The Customize dialog will appear.
  6. Go to the Options tab.

  7. Make sure there is a checkmark to the left of the Show Standard and Formatting Toolbars on Two Rows field.
  8. Make sure there is a checkmark to the left of the Always Show Full Menus field.
  9. Click on the Close button.
  10. The Standard and Formatting toolbars will now appear on separate rows, and you will see complete menus when you click on a Menu bar option.
Note: If you don’t know what an icon does, hold your mouse cursor over the icon without pressing any buttons. A ToolTip will appear, displaying the name and a brief explanation of the icon.
