To obtain a Form I-20 or DS-2019, students must show they have sufficient financial support to cover their academic costs of attendance at Georgetown Law and minimum living expenses for the Washington, D.C. area. All estimated expenses provided by International Student Services at Georgetown Law are for immigration purposes only. The estimates are meant to assist with issuing your Form I-20 or Form DS-2019 and to help prepare your financial documentation needed to obtain the F-1 or J-1 visa.

Expenses represent tuition, books, Georgetown Premier Plan health insurance, transportation, and basic living expenses for the Washington, DC area detailed on the Georgetown Law Tuition & Cost of Attendance page.

  • For F-1 status, expenses are estimated for the first academic year of program study (August 2025 – May 2026 for most students, July 2025 – May 2026 for LL.M. Summer Experience students). Estimates after May 2026 are not included.
  • For J-1 status, expenses are estimated for the entire length of program study.
  • If bringing a spouse and/or child(ren) to the United States while studying at Georgetown Law, additional basic living expenses will be calculated for each dependent seeking F-2 or J-2 status.
  • If you are returning from a leave of absence or in a degree program that only requires one semester of study at Georgetown Law, please email lawcentervisa@georgetown.edu for your estimated expenses and Form I-20 or Form DS-2019 program dates.

What Documents Can I Show for Proof of Funding?

You may use documents showing Personal Funds, Family Funds, Scholarships, or Loans.

All documents must be in English.

You can submit a single source of funding or a combination of financial documents.

Submit either your official financial account summary or bank letter.

All financial documents must state:

  • Name of Client (Your Name)
  • Date (Less than 6 months old)
  • Amount of Funds (Final Balance)
  • Currency of Funds (CNY, GBP, QAR, USD, etc.)
  • Funding Source (Savings, Checking, Stocks, etc.)
  • Funding Availability

Official bank account summaries may be obtained through your online bank account portal or received in print from the bank.  If you use a letter, it must be signed and printed on the bank’s official letterhead.

You will need to submit two documents – a Family Support Form and your family member’s official bank information:

  • Family Support Form – Sponsors must complete all form fields, as well as provide a date and signature.
  • Official Financial Account Summary or Bank Letter that includes:
    • Name of Client (Your Family Member’s Name)
    • Date (Less than 6 months old)
    • Amount of Funds (Final Balance)
    • Currency of Funds (CNY, GBP, QAR, USD, etc.)
    • Funding Source (Savings, Checking, Stocks, etc.)
    • Funding Availability

A Family Support Form must be submitted for each individual family member named on the bank documents. For example, if your mother sponsors you with one bank statement and your uncle sponsors you with one bank statement, you will need a Family Support Form from your mother and a Family Support Form from your uncle.

Official bank account summaries may be obtained through your family member’s online bank account portal or received in print from the bank.  If your family member uses a letter, it must be signed and printed on the bank’s official letterhead.

Scholarships awarded to students by Georgetown are not forwarded to International Student Services.

Awardees must upload a copy of the Georgetown award letter or award email that contains the numeric value of the scholarship received. The scholarship email can be downloaded as a PDF document and uploaded into the International Student Portal.
