The Law Library provides research training to first-year students in Legal Practice and upper-level students in classes and clinics.  See Legal Research Classes for more information.  In addition, tutorials are available on the Law Library’s website.

Use Policies

Lexis

Lexis offers students full use of Lexis for educational and employment-related research throughout the school year and summer. The Summer Access Program maintains your access to Lexis for May, June, July, and August. Enrollment is automatic; current students do not need to register for the Summer Access Program. For more information, please refer to the Lexis terms and conditions page.

Students are advised to check their employer’s policies before using their academic Lexis accounts for employment purposes.

Graduate Access Program

Recent Georgetown Law graduates receive extended access to Lexis+ through their law school ID for a designated period following graduation. Access is automatic; no registration is required. Graduates may use this access for any purpose, though they should confirm that such use complies with their employer’s policies.

Graduate access includes most of the same Lexis+ content and features available during law school, but excludes Public Records, Lexis+ AI, Law360, Practical Guidance, and LMO. During the graduate-access period, the law school student home page will automatically switch to a graduate view that includes graduate-specific career information and job-search resources.

Graduates will also receive free access to Lexis+ AI (Protégé) through the Lexis+ AI Insider Program for the duration of their graduate Lexis access. To activate that benefit, graduates must enroll through the program-specific Insider link.

Graduate Access Timing

For Georgetown graduates, the applicable access periods are as follows:

• May 2026 graduates:
  Lexis+ access expires December 31, 2026
  Graduate homepage begins July 1, 2026
  Rewards points expire June 30, 2026

ASPIRE Program

Graduates engaged in verifiable 501(c)(3) public interest work may apply for access to selected Lexis materials for 12 months through the ASPIRE program.

Westlaw

Students have full access to Westlaw for purposes directly related to law school coursework, including pro bono and public service programs, and public internships or externships that are part of your graduation requirements.

For use over the summer, current students automatically have access to Westlaw for non-commercial research. Examples of permissible uses are listed below.

• Summer law school classes
• Law Review and Journal research, including write-on competitions
• Research Assistant assignments
• Moot Court research
• Nonprofit work
• Clinical work
• Externship sponsored by the law school

Students with summer employment in law firms, corporations, government agencies, and alike should not use their academic accounts for research and must use their commercial accounts. Students may use their academic accounts to gain an understanding of the law and build research skills, but academic accounts may not be used to bill a client.

Graduating students can extend access for 6 months following graduation by enrolling in the Grad Elite program. Graduates may use their academic accounts for 60 hours a month to gain an understanding of the law, build research skills, and prepare for the bar. Academic accounts may not be used to bill a client. Apply for an extension after logging on.

Bloomberg Law

Bloomberg Law offers full use of accounts during the school year and over the summer, including research conducted for employment. For graduating students, access will continue for 6 months after graduation with no limitations on use. However, students and graduates are advised to check their employer’s policies before using their academic Bloomberg Law accounts for employment purposes.
