Welcome to Georgetown University Law Center! We in the IST Department
look forward to providing you with an optimal computing environment.
Please be advised that all first-year J.D. students are required
to have a laptop. (LLM students are not subject to this requirement,
but we believe that having a computer will facilitate their law school
experience.)
HARDWARE
If you are buying a new computer, we suggest that you get one with
at least 4 GB of RAM, an intel dual core processor, and a 500 GB hard-disk
drive. All laptops must have built-in WiFi (802.11b/g/n) capability.
OPERATING SYSTEM
For PCs, we recommend Microsoft Windows 7 Professional. For Apple, we recommend Mac OSX Snow
Leopard 10.6.
SOFTWARE
We recommend Microsoft Office 2010 for Windows and Microsoft Office 2008 for Apple.
WEB BROWSERS
The Law Center’s web-based applications are supported on the
following browsers: Internet Explorer 7+, Firefox 3+, or Safari
4+.
WEIGHT
Please take into consideration your potential laptop's weight. You will have a lot to carry around (textbooks are heavy), so you want the lightest laptop possible.
COMPUTER SUPPORT
The Technology Reference Desk is located in the E.B Williams
Law Library, Room 304. The technicians provide support for Law Center network
connectivity and anti-malware software. The
Technology Reference Desk hours are 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Mondays through
Thursdays, and 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Fridays, excluding University holidays. If you have any further questions,
please contact the Law Center's Helpdesk at helpdesk@law.georgetown.edu.
COMPUTER WARRANTIES
The Law Center does not provide hardware or software support. So you should purchase the most comprehensive warranty possible. That way, if you damage your laptop, someone will actually help you fix it and/or recover your data.
For example, Dell offers on-site service for up to three years, providing you buy the laptop through the Law Center link and purchase the extended three-year service warranty.
EXAMS
If you want to take your exams on a computer you will need to use your own laptop, which must be able to connect to the Internet. It is also a good idea to have a second (backup) laptop battery, since not all of the exam rooms have electrical outlets. Please be advised that the Law Center does not provide loaner laptops or power cords for student use.
