Beginning Fall 2019, the way students submit papers for seminar classes has changed.  While the Office of the Registrar will continue to track paper due dates (including extensions), students will no longer be able to submit papers through the Online Exam/Paper Management System.  Professors in seminars will select one of two options for receiving papers.  Please confirm the preferred method for paper submission with your professor(s).

Option One: Students can hand in printed or digital copies of their papers directly to the professor by the professor’s preferred method, including email, Canvas, or in-class submission.  Please note that, because many Faculty Assistants are also students, you may not submit papers to Faculty Assistants.

Option Two: Students will upload digital copies of their papers to a Box folder via a Formstack form (link provided by professor).

Final papers in seminars and other courses must be submitted to the professor by the paper deadline for the semester as published in the Academic Calendar or other deadline announced by the professor.  Due dates for papers are as firm as the dates of examinations.

Paper Extensions

By announcement at the beginning of the semester and subject to the maximum extensions set by the Registrar, a professor may advance or extend the due date of all papers for the seminar (except for those of graduating students).

Extensions for more than the maximum are rare and may not be granted solely by the professor.  Individual extensions up to the maximum professor-approved extension deadline may be granted by the professor, provided the professor notifies the Office of the Registrar of the extension by emailing lawreg@georgetown.edu.  The professor will determine what penalty, if any, applies to papers submitted after the approved deadline.  Students who fail to submit a final paper or who submit a final paper after the maximum professor-approved extension deadline will receive an AF for the seminar unless approval for a further extension is obtained from the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

Any request for an extension beyond the maximum professor-approved extension deadline is effective only upon review and approval of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and only for extenuating circumstances.  In no instance will an extension be granted beyond April 15 for papers due the preceding Fall semester, August 15 for papers due the preceding Spring semester, or October 15 for papers due the preceding Summer session.  Students who fail to submit a final paper by the deadline set by the Associate Dean will receive an AF for the seminar, but may petition the Dean of Students for conversion of that AF to a withdrawal (W) if they can demonstrate that a compelling health or personal emergency interfered with their capacity to complete the paper by the deadline.

Note to International Students in F-1 or J-1 Visa Status

U.S. visa restrictions dictate that extending the paper due date beyond the expected date of graduation as listed in the certificate of eligibility (I-20 or DS-2019 form) can be permitted only for compelling academic and/or medical reasons.  Any such paper extension must be approved in writing by an International Student Advisor in advance of the paper submission deadline.  Students must also obtain faculty member approval to any such extension.
