Former Canadian Ambassador to the GATT & WTO; Former Chief NAFTA Negotiator
John Weekes is a Canadian international trade diplomat and negotiator who played a central role in the development of North American and multilateral trade policy. He served as Canada’s Chief NAFTA Negotiator from 1991 to 1993, helping lead the negotiations that established the North American Free Trade Agreement. He subsequently served as Senior Assistant Deputy Minister for U.S. Affairs at Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and as Canada’s Ambassador to the World Trade Organization in Geneva from 1995 to 1999. Following his government service, Weekes served as a senior advisor at Sidley Austin and a senior business advisor at Bennett Jones, advising clients on international trade policy. He currently works as an independent international trade policy adviser.
