Fellows act as ambassadors for the Institute of International Economic Law, particularly as it pertains to the Institute’s initiatives and signature events including the Center on Inclusive Trade and Development, the Sovereign Debt Forum, the International Law & Policy Colloquium, DC Fintech Week, and the Global Trade Academy. These events and initiatives provide fellows access to top scholars, policymakers, practitioners, industry executives, and think tanks; and create unparalleled opportunities to network with leading professionals in the field of international economic law. Recent speakers have hailed from a wide variety of organizations, including the European Commission, Atlantic Council, Mexican Ministry of the Economy, ICAP, IMF, USTR, multinational law firms, and universities in both the United States and Europe.

Fellows also act as contributors, helping to share and extend the work of the Institute. Fellows are encouraged to author blog posts, and may have opportunities to support IIEL’s research efforts and public engagement initiatives. IIEL faculty and staff will review and provide editorial oversight for the fellows’ contributions.

As part of the fellowship program, IIEL Fellows are required to attend a minimum of 3 IIEL events and attend 1 fellowship check-ins each semester. Fellows are also encouraged to organize or collaborate on special initiatives as a means of extending the reach of international economic law. Recent student-led initiatives include the Summer 2021 “Women in International Economic Law” Book Club.

Each year, one outstanding IIEL Fellow is named a John H. Jackson Memorial Scholar, and receives a financial award toward second semester tuition.

Apply to the IIEL Fellowship

The Institute of International Economic Law (IIEL) Fellows Program accepts applications from current Georgetown Law students interested in being named IIEL Fellows at the beginning of the fall semester each year. Learn more about the application process and the Fellowship here.

Applicants must submit a resume; a Fellowship Interest Form; and 1-2 page narrative statement indicating their interest in the program, what they might be able to contribute to IIEL, and how participation in the Fellowship will support their academic and career goals.

Applications should be emailed as a single PDF to lawiiel@georgetown.edu with the subject “IIEL Fellowship Application, 2022-2023” by no later than 6:00 pm ET on September 16, 2023. All timely applications will be reviewed by the IIEL Fellowship Selection Committee.

International Economic Law (IEL) Colloquium Series

Each spring, our Fellows are invited to attend the Institute’s weekly IEL Colloquia. The Colloquium Series offers students the opportunity to network with key policymakers and thought leaders in government or industry.

Students interested in receiving credit for the Colloquia may enroll in the two-credit International Economic Law and Policy course offered each spring semester.
