Alejandro Jara is a Chilean lawyer and former senior diplomat whose career has focused on international economic relations and the multilateral trading system. He served in Chile’s diplomatic service from 1976 to 2005, including as Director General for International Economic Relations and as Chile’s Ambassador to the World Trade Organization in Geneva from 2000 to 2005. During his diplomatic career, he participated in the negotiation of free trade agreements with Central America, Canada, Korea, and Mexico and was a senior official to APEC. From 2005 to 2013, Jara served as Deputy Director-General of the WTO. He subsequently served as Senior Counsel at King & Spalding in Geneva and has taught international trade law at institutions in Chile, China, and Mexico. Since 2020, he has served as an arbitrator under the WTO’s Multi-Party Interim Arrangement on dispute settlement.
