James L. Bacchus is an international trade lawyer, scholar, and former U.S. trade official who played a significant role in the development of the WTO dispute settlement system. He was one of the founding members of the WTO Appellate Body and served twice as its Chairman, adjudicating more WTO disputes than any other Appellate Body member. Before joining the Appellate Body, Bacchus served as a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Florida and as an international trade negotiator for the United States. He subsequently became Distinguished University Professor of Global Affairs and Director of the Center for Global Economic and Environmental Opportunity at the University of Central Florida. He is the author of numerous books and articles on international trade, law, global governance, and sustainable development, including Trade and Freedom, The Willing World, and Trade Links.
