Market Overview

Litigation is the primary practice in New Jersey; general commercial, environmental, insurance, labor/employment, and intellectual property. New Jersey had a once-booming legal market, but it has since begun to dry up. There are a few small “big law” satellite offices (Greenberg Traurig and K&L Gates) located in New Jersey, but you are more likely to find more mid-sized firms, with a few offices throughout New Jersey and/or a satellite office in New York.

Recruiting Outlook

Georgetown Law students who are interested in going to New Jersey, ties to the area are definitely preferred, particularly since NJ employers are not typically used to having students from other law schools interested in the area. Firms in New Jersey usually hire from the local schools (Rutgers and Seton Hall). When the market tanked in 2009, many of the NJ firms suffered greatly and were left decimated—many firm sizes were cut in half. There has, however, been some reports of substantial growth or a “rebirth” of the legal market in Southern New Jersey as there has been a development of corporations in that region.
