Professor Hirsh is Professor of English at Georgetown University, where he teaches courses in Middle English literature, American Literature, and Education, such as "Reading, Teaching and Social Reflection" and "Issues in Education," for students who work as teachers' aides in inner-city schools and in literacy-related tutorial programs. His interest is in inner-city elementary education, particularly in teaching language arts to disadvantaged K-6 children, and in the social and cultural issues which grow out of and inform such teaching. Professor Hirsh has taught children in emergent literacy in Tower Hamlets, London, and has worked with a number of tutorial programs in Washington, D.C., including, over the past twenty years, the Sursum Corda Georgetown University Tutorial Program. Prior to coming to Georgetown, he was an instructor in the Department of English at Lehigh University. Professor Hirsh also has written articles, book reviews, and books on medieval and other topics.
