John Michelich is a career prosecutor with over 37 years of experience prosecuting criminal cases at the state, federal and international levels. Currently, he serves as Senior Litigation Counsel in the Fraud Section of the Justice Department and is responsible for conducting investigations and trials of complex financial crimes in federal district courts nationwide including corporate fraud, securities fraud, bank fraud, health care fraud and violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. A federal prosecutor since 1988, Professor Michelich has conducted grand jury investigations or jury trials in more than twenty federal districts. In 1998, the DOJ selected Professor Michelich to serve a detail to the United Nations War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague where he conducted investigations and trials concerning crimes against humanity and violations of the Geneva Conventions during the civil war in Yugoslavia. Previously, Professor Michelich was First Assistant State’s Attorney in Sangamon County (Springfield) Illinois where he prosecuted hundreds of criminal offenses including murder, sexual assault, robbery, narcotics and other violent crimes, and supervised 17 attorneys in the office. During law school, Professor Michelich clerked for Hon. William H. Webster, Circuit Judge, United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.
Professor Michelich is an experienced teacher and practitioner of Trial Advocacy, having tried over 75 jury trials to verdict, and having taught Trial Advocacy for over 30 years. Professor Michelich regularly teaches Trial Advocacy for federal prosecutors at the Justice Department’s National Advocacy Center in Columbia, SC, and serves on the faculty of the National Institute for Trial Advocacy “Building Trial Skills” program offered annually at Georgetown Law Center. In 2014, Professor Michelich was invited to participate as a visiting instructor in the Intensive Trial Advocacy Course at the Notre Dame Law School. Professor Michelich is licensed to practice law in Illinois and Iowa, and is a qualified Solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales.
