B.S., summa cum laude, Miami University; J.D., magna cum laude, LL.M.(Taxation), with distinction, Georgetown. Professor Schmidt, a former legislation counsel to the Joint Committee on Taxation, is the firmwide practice team leader for Baker & Hostetler’s International Tax Practice Team. He has a wide range of experience in corporate and international tax matters, particularly in the tax treatment of foreign sales corporations, the extraterritorial income exclusion, treaty interpretation, tax credit planning and hedging transactions. Professor Schmidt has also served as a partner in the International Corporate Tax group of the Washington National Tax office of KPMG LLP. Prior to joining KPMG, he acted as Legislation Counsel to the United States Congress Joint Committee on Taxation, where he focused on issues involving international taxation, the taxation of financial products and corporate taxation. Professor Schmidt has practiced tax law at the Washington office of Dewey Ballantine LLP, where he was responsible for a variety of tax planning issues including commodities and foreign currency hedging, subpart F and foreign tax credit planning and foreign sales corporation issues. He has also published several articles and is a frequent speaker at Tax Executive Institute and similar conferences.
