John Vasily

B.S.(Accounting), magna cum laude, Villanova; J.D., cum laude , Georgetown. John Vasily is a partner of the international law firm Debevoise & Plimpton.  Based in New York City, he is Co-Chair of the firm’s Global Financial Institutions Practice and focuses his practice on merger and acquisition and capital raising transactions in the financial services sector.  Professor Vasily is a recognized expert on cross-border transactions, particularly in emerging markets such as Asia and Latin America. 

Professor Vasily was selected as a "Dealmaker of the Year" by the American Lawyer in 2011 for his work representing AIG in its worldwide asset disposition program, including the IPO of American International Assurance, AIG's market leading pan-Asian insurance operations.  The IPO raised $21 billion, which was used to pay down the loans made by the US government to AIG as part of its bail-out in 2008.  The offering was the largest single offering in the history of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. 

Chambers USA (2010) ranks Professor Vasily as a leading lawyer for Financial Services M&A, commenting that he “is an absolutely phenomenal business lawyer who focuses on financial institutions M&A."  The Legal 500 US (2010) recognizes him as a leading M&A lawyer, commenting that “his experience in cross-border M&A transactions is second to none.”  He is also recognized as a leading M&A lawyer by IFLR Expert Guides (2010), focusing on his M&A work in the insurance sector for clients such as AIG, AXA and Prudential. Additionally, he was selected as a "BTI Client Service All-Star” in 2010.

Professor Vasily graduated from Georgetown University Law Center in 1982, and serves on the Law Center's Board of Visitors.
