Professor Butler began adjunct teaching at Georgetown Law Center in 1979, and has also taught as an adjunct Professor of Government and the School of Foreign Service undergraduate Georgetown courses in environment. Professor Butler has been a partner at Steptoe & Johnson, Powell, Goldstein, Frazer & Murphy, and at Dickstein, Shapiro & Morin, and Of Counsel at Wilmer Cutler and Pickering. Professor Butler has been general counsel of Oceana, vice president of government relations and counsel of the National Audubon Society, and general counsel and acting executive director of the Environmental Defense Fund. He has taught at Yale Law School as an adjunct professor of law, as a teaching assistant in the Yale Department of Political Science, and as an adjunct professor at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. He is past Board Chair of the D.C.-MD.-VA. Audubon Naturalist Society, and is a current member of the Administration's Trade and Environment Advisory Committee. He was also a resident tutor in Government at Harvard, and studied at Oxford on a Marshall Scholarship. Professor Butler clerked for Judge Robert C. Zampano of the U.S. District Court in New Haven, CT.
