Since 2003, John Merrick has served as a Special Counsel to the Associate Chief Counsel (International) in the Office of Chief Counsel, Internal Revenue Service. During 2010, he was detailed to the Senate Committee on Finance, where he handled international tax matters. During 2007, he was detailed to HM Revenue & Customs in London where he worked on various matters involving the United Kingdom’s taxation of foreign profits. Prior to joining the Office of Chief Counsel, Mr. Merrick practiced international tax in the national offices of two accounting firms in Washington, DC. He also practiced international tax and corporate tax in Chicago with an accounting firm and a law firm. He is a frequent speaker at tax conferences, including for the American Bar Association and Practicing Law Institute. He passed the May 1990 Certified Public Accountant Examination.
