Professor Tankersley is staff attorney for the Marketing Practices Division of the Federal Trade Commission. From 1990-2003, he conducted general trial and appellate litigation on federal regulatory issues and consumer law as a staff attorney for Public Citizen Litigation Group in Washington, DC. While an associate at Covington & Burling, he worked for the firm's Neighborhood Legal Services Program for six months doing trial and appellate litigation in housing and poverty law cases as part of the firm's pro bono program. Professor Tankersley served as law clerk to Judge Gerhard Gesell of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. He served as chair of the American Bar Association's Committee on Consumer and Personal Rights Litigation of the Section of Litigation, and as Chair of the Federal Bar Association's Committee on Government Information and Privacy of the Administrative Law Section.
